While the importance of early intervention is widely accepted by medical professions, a lack of effective screening guidelines has led to delays in the identification and subsequent referrals to early intervention specialists. As a result children often miss out on intervention during the most critical time for brain maturation and development.
Reason for my topic: I have found working closely with this population that I see many 2 1/2 to 3 year olds for initial evaluations that have very few words. Parents have usually suspected a delay for a long time but their pediatricians have felt the child would talk "eventually." Earlier intervention could have helped these children begin to communicate before the age of 3.
Heather, great job on your blog! I agree this is a very important topic!! Your problem statement looks good; however, make sure you include who you are referring to (e.g., children birth to age 3, or children 1-3 years old) somewhere in your problem statement. Other than that it looks great!! This is a great place to journal your thoughts about your dissertation and ideally, get feedback from others. So, keep blogging your journey!! :)

Delete~Does that sound better Dr. Reeves?
Thank you!
I completely agree with you - dr's tend to brush off delays noted by parents - I work for EI and I'm very interested in reading more! Thanks!

I agree Heather, we've been getting bombed with lots of referrals, some appropriate and others not so much. THat's part of what I want to determine with my research. What people are doing out there and how to make what everyone is doing work for them. Lord knows going through this process has made me take a closer look at what I'm doing in therapy and considering changes to improve my lot. I'll be watching your blog a bit as I think we're close in topic. :)
